Rostrum Diaries, 2022

<$image.asset(“img-1.jpg”)>

Rostrum Diaries, 2022.

An event by ArtLit TimesLIVE INTERVIEW

at 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐋𝐢𝐭 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝑎 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑖 𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙 held 𝑜𝑛 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟳 (𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆)(Excuse me for the casual spoken Indian English)…………………………………….Shirish: Hello Pooja, Hello everyone

Pooja: Hello sir, I had to start actually. Good evening everyone. I am actually very known to Sir. Its like we share a group together. And he is the president of the group and I am so happy to be a part of this and I welcome you Sir.So, I think creativity takes courage and I would say that Sir has made a different way to come up with a career, he has chosen a different way, I think we are very known to a ballpoint pen which we usually go through our daily life, but we never take it as a part of our, but I think ballpoints have proven themselves to be a part of professional as well as amateur doodlers. So, Sir has recently launched his book, Exploring the ballpoint, so I would like to ask Sir what have you explained us in the ballpen and how would you like to approach.

Shirish: Ok. Good evening everyone. My journey in art started long back during my childhood. My mother was a painter. So art was at home and I could see her paint every day and so inspiration was not a rare thing for me. So I was into art and it developed during the school times and then my mother decided I should be having further education in art. So I went to Pune and there I had my formal education in commercial art. It used to be commercial art in those days, nowadays what it is called is graphic design and branding and all those things. So I came back to Belgaum after my education and had my own graphic design studio here. For many years, I think for almost about 25 years I have done a lot of design work in Belgaum. Most of the established brands and companies have taken services from me. But after doing that, when I was almost fifty years old, I came to a point wherein I thought that my services actually did not give myself any more satisfaction. So I thought of doing something of my own. What happens is with applied art you have to work for others and others have some requirements that you have to fulfill. So there is nothing much that you can add your own hundred percent into that. So I went into that another journey in my second innings of life I started with my fine art journey. But one of my friends, he said that now look there are lakhs of artists in this world who are trying to make a position for themselves, what is the uniqueness that you have, you will be having to stand apart from others. So art is complete life by itself and finding your own voice in artistic creations is a very very difficult thing. So subjects is one choice that you can specialize into one and then have your voice heard by the people. Or then there are some mediums and techniques and it went on, I went on in search of the perfect medium for me to express and I was using oil colors, acrylic colors for many years, but I did not see that the things that I wanted to put in I did not have the expertise or whatever the fluency we can say with the brushwork or those things. And as it is I was into drawing for many many decades. One day I found that the ballpoint pen may help me and tried one drawing with the ballpoint pen and it really came out good. And since then my journey started with the ballpoint pens and I had my first show in Pune in 2009 when I was fifty years old. But the show, the people in Pune, they responded so well and they came up with so many questions, how did this happen. Everyone had the question that the ballpoint, we know the ballpens, and we use for doodling in our school days and college days, every one of us uses that for doodling. But how come that you have made such beautiful artworks. And then as that rendering came naturally to me, the answers to these questions were not so easy to find for me. So I started teaching my techniques to people and I conducted several workshops in Pune, Belgaum, Bangalore, and taught others to use ballpoint pens. Pooja also happens to be one of my students in the workshop. And then from that, the questions those I received, I tried to answer in my own way. But you know for a physical workshop there is a limit, there is a physical limit to be present and to arrange for everything. So finally, it came down to writing a book. And the pandemic was a great opportunity just like for many others in this world that we have faced everything. We faced bad times also but some people made use of that time as a productive time for themselves, and this is the outcome. And I have explained all my techniques in that, every secret and including about forty artworks are featured in the book along with the techniques and all the thought process that goes behind the work, I have explained in that.

Pooja: Sir, so is this book helpful for artists as well as nonartists? What do you think?

Shirish: I think so. Because you know rendering with ballpoint pens needs a lot of patience. You just don’t need yourself, the pen and the paper for making art. What you need is deep thinking, and persistence, and your efforts and patience. Those things are very very…. the meditative thinking that goes behind these things is very very important that is what I feel. And it is a great stress reliever that is what I can say. Because you know the rendering… suppose I have to cover a particular area with a brush and paint I can just dip the brush in paint and have the wash and the whole area can be painted in one second. But with pen, you have to work for hours together, you have to put in your efforts to make up that area. And that time spent with that thing is a repetitive process wherein you keep on enjoying your thought process. And there is so much of a, you know going back in time, pondering upon the events in your life, finding solutions to that, that is a great stress reliever for everyone who tries, that is what I feel.

Pooja: Thank you, Sir, it took a lot of time for you to reach over here, so what would you say, like even we will have that period of time or maybe we can achieve it a little earlier?

Shirish: Pooja, that is a good question. But actually, you know, art is a long journey and I think that it is an unending journey. So, even I don’t know. I am also still enjoying. I am also a student and every day when I work, I definitely learn something new every day. Every drawing is a new experience, every drawing is a new journey, and you know I am always or by that process of creation wherein within the process before I finish one artwork, I have something in my mind that I should try. So, I always say, many artists say this that my next drawing will be my best drawing.

Pooja: So, if anybody would like to ask questions to Sir? Anyone? Regarding maybe his book, art or whatever it can……… OK

Audience: Can I ask one secret? What types of ballpens are useful or helpful in art?

Shirish: Ok. So I start with a quote from my cousin brother. In my first exhibition he came to the show, he saw all the work and he said that I am going to stop using the ballpoint pen from today, because what he says is I am actually insulting the ballpoint pen by using it just for writing. So that is the power the pen has. Because you know there are subtle differences between any other kind of pen and a ballpoint pen. The ink of ballpoint pen is a oil-based and of a thicker consistency ink. What you do is you can have pressure sensitivity while you use. So you can have a lighter line and a darker line depending on how you put the pressure of your hand on that. So that is one thing. But the question you asked is important. Long back in 2008 when I started this, I found out that there are many artists who use ballpoint pens. I came to know about one artist in US, some Jerry, and he mentioned that India is one of the largest producers of ballpen refills. Ok?. and in those days, there was no color ink available, only red, green, blue, and black. Only four color inks were available. So I was searching for yellow. Yellow is a basic color, without which we can not have many other colors. Ok? and yellow was not available. I was in search of that and I could get some pens from US, UK, and Japan etc. But how about here? And then one more important thing I came to know that you can not use canvas as your drawing surface. Because canvas is coated with some acrylic primers and that interacts with the inks and the inks fade away after some time. So the pens are made basically for the paper. Paper is the perfect substrate for that. But how about the inks? So, most of the inks fade away. And there is no longevity for the inks. But many others, even watercolors also fade if you keep them in direct sunlight. Ok? so same with ballpoint pens. But then there was no data available, there was no one to tell me that this is artist quality or this is student quality or this is just for writing, there is no differentiation available in those branded pens. Even the best-known brands like Reynolds and all, their blue ink also faded. Ok? and that was a shock for me. So what I did was, I collected all the blue color ink pens whichever brand I could put my hand on, I bought all of them and tested for light-fastness against direct sunlight. And then I chose the best ones. Like you know, Uniball has a blue color which is good, Pentek has a red color which is good, and like that and so on. But then Yellow still remained, there was no yellow. And then I could get from foreign countries and I used them in my drawings. But recently for the last four-five years we can get Indian brands and they are so cheap and so good, I am so proud that India has achieved that level. You know, they are use-and-throw. We get a complete set of ten colors in just fifty rupees, can you imagine that? and the colors are so wonderful, the writing, very very smooth, very smooth, so that is not a problem now absolutely. But there are color sets which you have to use for this. And I have written everything about that, whatever the colors are available, how to mix, because you know, there are no premixed colors available like in acrylic or oil colors, professional grade colors, we have those names for the colors, you may be knowing lemon yellow or golden yellow and those kind of things. There is no luxury in ballpoint pens that you get a lemon yellow or something like that. So they are not named at all. There are no names on the ballpens. And each company has a different yellow, has a different red, so you have to use the same and prepare your own drawing in your own way. So there is a method to mix those colors. You have to use your paper as a palette, drawing surface itself as a palette, so you can not mix the color somewhere else and bring it to the paper. Ok? So there is no scope for a mistake. You can not do even a single mistake. Once done, it is done.

Pooja: Thank you sir, it was a great pleasure to know you and your art. Thank you once again.

Shirish: Thank you, everyone.

The great lockdown of 2020

I was featured on theballpointer.com in 2015. A lot of ink has flowed through the pen onto the paper since then and it is time to share a few things.

While recalling the events of the last five years, the first thing that comes to my mind is the “Great Lockdown” due to the covid19 pandemic. But before I discuss this I would like to say something about my new art studio. As artists, we certainly need a space where we have the privacy, the freedom, and our own undisturbed space to create, play and enjoy the artistic mess. I have designed the studio in such a way that the north and south sides which are longer lengthwise are all glass, naturally lighting the interiors evenly throughout the day. One of the other two sides is a plain wall reaching a height of 12 feet which allows me to mount a bigger canvas for painting. The remaining side is reserved for the display of my artwork. I am fortunate to have such a spacious place and that too on the terrace of my own house where I can reach by climbing just a few stairs, which is very convenient for my current age of 62 years. The making of the studio was a dream for many years but with the help of my family now I have a big enough space to engage in art activities on a larger scale, working on many different art projects at the same time. I am looking forward to even conducting workshops for art enthusiasts after the current difficult social situation is over.

The “Lockdown” has changed everything for everyone. It has changed the way we live our daily lives. It was difficult to find peace in the initial two periods of the lockdown. In the third phase of the total lockdown, I decided to move away from the TV. And I challenged myself to make one artwork every day, complete in every respect. To my astonishment, I could really do it by working in a smaller format and by simplifying the content. This period of the lockdown really came to me as a blessing in disguise. I made more than twenty artworks in those days. The average completion time for each artwork was just two hours. And the best part of this is that I am ready for an “en Plein air” session with my Ballpoint pens. I am very happy to share some of these new works of Ballpoint pen art.

Necessity is the mother of invention

“Necessity is the mother of invention”

In my book “Exploring the Ballpoint”, I have expanded on my thoughts about what the above famous saying means to me -

It is rightly said that necessity is the mother of invention. Here, the invention does not mean just any material object or process invented by any scientist, but encompasses everything including our thought process, how we approach life situations, face problems, and find solutions. When the situations, society, people, intellect, or the level of satisfaction become stagnant in any way we feel stuck in one place and then life forces us to do something about it to change for the better. Every time, we have a choice to move forward in one way or the other and it depends on our state of mind which one to choose. Thinking out of the box helps in finding ways that may be unconventional in the normal sense, but it brings to light many things that we might never think about otherwise. But to do so we must also be ready to take risks and spend enough time experimenting with possibilities that seem to promise a better result. And here, nature’s gift of imagination which is unique to humans can make a big contribution in finding ways that are untrodden so far. So it all starts with recognizing the stagnant situation and responding to it in a positive way with an intention to move forward.

Exploring the Ballpoint is available on Amazon and at

https://shirishdeshpande.art

#exploringtheballpoint #art #artist #practice #necessity #ballpoint #ballpen #drawing #book #artbook #artistshirish<$image.asset(“img-1.jpg”)>

Book Reviews - Many

‘Exploring the Ballpoint’ is not a mere ‘how to draw’ book. It goes beyond the technique and sets an example of exploring a medium of a ballpoint pen. Shirish Deshpande gives a rich experience of line, texture, and nuanced colors out of a ballpoint pen in his portraits and landscapes. Like an engraving or etching, it produces a unique quality of a drawing or print.

Deepak Ghare

Author of many books on art and senior art critic, Mumbai.

………………………

‘Exploring the Ballpoint’

………………………

“Got my copy of the book yesterday. It is truly amazing. Beautiful drawings, tips, techniques, and references. I am very glad to have this book in my collection. “ - Vivek Kumthekar, Pune.

…………..

Hello Shirish,

Have been wanting to reach out to you for a long time. Yes not only did I get the book, but you will be absolutely thrilled to know that my son began to implement some of the concepts within the next hour. So it is so amazing to see new sparks and for that, I want to thank you profusely. We (and he in particular) have been observing each of the pictures with such great keenness.

This was a gift from me to my family, and to say that was well-received is an absolute understatement, and for that Thank you :) Looking forward to more such inspiration.

Jeevan Betgeri, USA

-……………..

Excellent gift for daughters on their birthday..

Dr Adwait Aphale, Kolhapur

…………..

Dear friends,

I recently ordered Shirish sir’s book on ballpoint pen art. It’s a wonderful endeavor by sir, he takes you through different stages of using ballpoint pens for paintings, from choosing the pens to the final work. I genuinely felt that it could be used by anyone, even someone who is completely new to art but wants just to try something. Ballpoint is also not a common medium and it’s hard to get guidance on how to use them and the techniques.

Thanks a lot, sir 😊

Shipra Gupta, Bangalore

…………………………..

It is such a treasure to have a signed copy of the ‘EXPLORING THE BALLPOINT’ book by our very own Shirish Deshpande, an eminent artist from Belgaum, a tremendous master artist of ballpoint pen art. This is a beautiful book by him, which contains the guidance and techniques of rendering with a ballpoint pen in step by step process.

Punya Keerthi P, Bangalore

…………………………

“This book by the famous artist Shirish Deshpande is for those wanting to explore a new medium - the ballpoint pen.
Book Review by Viveca

“Exploring the Ballpoint” by Shirish Deshpande takes an excellent dive into the wondrous world of ballpoint pen art. When one thinks of ballpoint pen art, they probably think of someone drawing doodles and caricatures at the back of a classroom. Not many would think of landscapes, still life, and other artistic masterpieces.

With his book, Mr. Deshpande breaks this barrier and shows people the true power of the ballpoint pen. With each intricacy laid out in exemplary detail, he takes you on an exploration of the art form from the very basics. It is through these basics that a masterpiece is born. Alongside visual representations, and step-by-step guidance, Mr. Deshpande has managed to capture the essence of his art through words as well. His explanations behind his work are remarkably detailed, giving the reader a true sense of what goes into the art that he creates. So much so that the reader can learn the ways of this art form as well.

One would look at a ballpoint pen as an ordinary office supply, but he has taken something so simple and maxed it out to its full potential. Each piece of his has a life of its own, and he takes you on the journey of all of his creations in his book.

If you’re a lover of art, especially art created out of the ordinary, “Exploring the Ballpoint” is a must-read. Shirish Deshpande has taken the proverb “the pen is mightier than the sword” and brought it to life with each stroke of his ballpoint pen.

Viveca Pavate, is a daughter of a friend, a budding poet, and writer, and an artist herself. She also co-founded a small business of her own (@infinite__chaos on Instagram)

BOOK REVIEW

Exploring the ballpoint

Shirish Deshpande is my elder brother. His book “Exploring the ballpoint” not only exhibits his artistry but also brings out the engineer within him. I have been witnessing his art since my childhood. The precision with which he works is not only limited to the art but, to every aspect of his life. He is not only a painter, fine artist, or an abstract painter, but a scientist, explorer, and an ever-inquisitive person. I have seen his precision in making a large reflective telescope himself, the woodwork required for making the telescope, to his precision in even making a perfect parcel!!

The delineations, a complete 3-dimensional to-the-scale model of a complete colony, which he undertook for a builder, show, how he can read the engineering drawings, understand the material characteristics, and visualize the intricate architecture of the buildings which is not yet come into existence.

The precision with which he accomplished the pixel-level image editing on the computer, exhibits his micro-level visualization. Be it designing icons to digital fonts. He can visualize the minute modifications which are required for the font to be rendered from 6 points up to 144 points. This is possible because he is also a very fine calligrapher. The calligrapher has the precise study of the pen or the tool which he uses.

I mention all the above, because, after reading “Exploring the ballpoint”, I remembered his precision and studiousness. Some years back, he gave me a book to read titled “Drawing with the right side of the brain”. This shows, how deep he thinks about the involvement of human components in creating the art – right from the brain to the fingertips. When he was young, looking at his precision, our uncle – Shashikaka - had predicted that he would become a neurosurgeon!

The art created using the ball-point pen is possible because he not only understands the color mixing but also understands the engineering behind making a ball-point. The in-flow, the pressure required on the ball-point as well as the viscosity of the different inks used in the ball-point pens. Apart from this engineering, one can see not only the likeness in the portraits but the fine expressions which he brings out. These expressions are so intricate that one can actually experience the thoughts of the subject !!

I would conclude, by saying, we have here not only an artist, but another Leonardo-da-Vinci, the engineer, the visualizer, and the finest artist.

-Ravi Deshpande,

Software Engineer, Mumbai

Exploring the Ballpoint — A Marathi Book Review

9011335230

<a
The Visible and the Invisible in Art (Marathi)

The Universe in the Word Guru

ART – AN ENDLESS JOURNEY

I do not remember exactly when I picked up the drawing. Like all other children of my age, I too used to draw random pictures. The earliest memory I have is of an incident that happened when I was in primary school. I had drawn the picture on my slate, which was that of a train. I had shown the railway bogie, with the door open. This minute observation was so much liked by my teacher, Mrs Kulkarni that she took the slate all around the school and showed it to all the classrooms!! My joy knew no bounds that day and that incident probably drew me closer to art and drawing. As I continued to excel in drawing later, my mother, who was an accomplished artist herself, decided to send me to Abhinav Kala Vidyalay in Pune, for my future training in art.

Very soon I completed my Diploma in Commercial Art, which was then a very lucrative and popular course. I returned to Belgaum in 1979 and started my own business/profession as a graphic designer and got totally involved and entangled in the profession. For the next two decades, I was busy delivering a range of design projects for a number of clients. My portfolio included graphic design in all its variations, architectural delineations, 3D models, font design and also computer graphics. By the year 2000, everything had changed from 100% manual artwork to computer clipart!! I soon realized that most clients did not need my design talent. I was indeed very much disheartened. By then I was already in my late forties . . . what next??? I made out a list of what all things I could do . . . from drop and pickup service for school kids to tuitions, teaching art and craft, culinary arts to creating a fashion brand . . . I played with, toyed with, evaluated and considered all the options, without fear, favour or prejudice. Those days, I was associated with a reputed newspaper as their page design consultant. Along with that, after a long gap, I dabbled once again in oil colours and watercolours.

Those days, only four-coloured ballpoint pens were available . . . and I too had one. One day I picked up my four-coloured pen and drew a picture. Lo and behold!! Everyone, including me, was astounded and astonished at the outcome of this newfound medium of art. I created a few more artworks with the ball-point pen and went to my tutors in Pune and also to a few artist friends. They all opined that it was the first time they had seen such innovation in art. Even then, I was not convinced about the uniqueness of my artwork. I then searched on the internet and found that quite a few artists use ballpoint pens for their art but the method, pattern and grip on the ballpoint pen differs. Then came circa 2009 and in my fiftieth year, an exhibition of my artworks, purely done in ballpoint pen, was put up in Darpan Art Gallery in Pune. The response and wholehearted support, appreciation and encouragement that came from the art lovers in and around Pune, became the Fixed Capital for my future journey in the world of art.

The past decade has seen a considerable number of my exhibitions and workshops on art getting organized and hosted. A book about my ballpoint pen techniques is about to be published soon. My creations have reached a large number of homes and offices of art lovers, art connoisseurs and art galleries across the globe. But In spite of all this I always feel there is so much to learn . . . every new creation is an entirely new experience. I always feel this is an endless journey. The beginning of a new piece of art comes from a spontaneous idea or feeling or concept. Then, after a little bit of basic planning, begins an unknown, curious and impatient journey of creativity!! During this process my own existence is lost in the time warp- ranging between four to five hours a day totalling 20 to 40 hours many a time- and suddenly, at one fine point I am awakened from my happy and creative trance when the picture starts telling me, “Your job is now over . . . I am born.“ Although the artist puts his heart and soul into his creations, his heart and soul grow, instead of shrinking, with every creation . . . and that is probably why my experience has always been that almost all artists are large-hearted and loving and empathetic.

The world would be so much better and more beautiful if everyone was an artist!!

Shirish Deshpande

Art and artistic expression

Art is everywhere. The word Art encompasses everything about and around us. We use that word liberally to describe all that gives us pleasure. Art of cooking, the art of problem-solving, art of war, the art of teaching, the art of trading, the art of living, and what not? Even the art of lying?

Art — An Endless Journey (Marathi)

About the Visible and the invisible in art

About the visible and the invisible in art

Every painting has more than just a visible layer that is seen by the eyes. The visible picture plane or layer contains the pictorial elements drawn or painted by the artist.

There’s another invisible layer which is about the logical relationship of various artistic elements in the painting. If the painting follows the basic rules of aesthetics, then the viewer subconsciously spends more time observing. If the viewer is satisfied with the presentation, he says the artwork is good.

Then there’s one more invisible layer that is about the relationship between color, tonal values, and the subject. This layer invokes an emotional response that is unique to each viewer creating a personal bond with that work of art. If the artwork is successful in doing so, then the response is a ‘wow’.

And then there is one more important ‘memory’ layer, that finally resides in the memories of the viewer as an after-image. Human memories are very complex and they play a very vital role in decision-making. They create our likes and dislikes, and they’re the source of all our desires.

Finally, when all of the above coincide, that is, when a viewer comes across an artwork that creates the right emotional response in his or her mind and invokes certain memories at the right time….. The artwork is sold. He “owns” the artwork with all of its flaws and all of its beauty. It is no small thing. It is a unique instance in the life of the artist, viewer, and artwork.

Of course, there are exceptions and others may have different experiences.

Shirish Deshpande

About Art and the Artist

There is nothing good or bad in art. You can see so many lovely and cute drawings and paintings made by kids as well, even as the rendering may look childish at first. We create art because we are inspired to do so and not because someone has forced us to do it. So the whole responsibility for the outcome lies on us. Creating art itself is an art. Art is not meant to be useful for some purpose. (We use the art for decoration and many other reasons. But that is certainly not the primary reason.) So the artist has freedom of choice of subject, medium, colors, size, etc …. No one except the artist should dictate how the artist should express his or her ideas. From conception until the work is finished, no one else but the artist should remain in control of the creative process.

As artists, we are attracted by all the beautiful things around us… Including other artists’ good work… And then there is an urge to try something in their style… It is ok to try for the purpose of practice but this should be for personal stuff and not for public display.

Finding your own style comes naturally as we mature in thought and process…

‘Artists block’ is not a problem… Many artists face this some of the other time… If you understand what freedom really means, you will easily overcome this😊

Don’t put any restrictions on yourself… Make anything that you wish… But see that you spend time with “yourself”… That’s what matters most. All that really matters is inside you. And only you are privileged to bring it out on the canvas.

Shirish Deshpande
